Student societies
...are an important part of university life
Student Societies can be profoundly important
They are students creating spaces for other students. In music, they give people people a space for creative expression. They often help with a sense of identity and belonging as well.
They matter!
The lists of Music Socs changes over time, with societies coming and going. Sometimes even big societies have a ‘snooze’ while a members sort out their committee at the beginning of the year. As we enter the start of the academic year in 2027 for instance, BandSoc, RockSoc and Russ, are all snoozing. We very much they wake up soon!
Socs:
A big one – they almost like a music department alongside our music department!
(Yes…..we’re excellent friends)
They oversee several ensembles and take part in our big end of semester concerts. You’ll find all their ensembles on here in the ensembles section. Their ensembles are run by talented and dedicated students.
Please not that they have a separate membership fee for their ensembles.
Band Soc focus on gigs and live music. They have a monthly Jam session which they run at the Dairy alongside WK Live. They represent a wide variety of styles and sub genres.
Band Soc is a good route for getting to know other students and musicians.
Rock Soc are focused on making music and going to gigs. Genre wise, they represent Rock and the subsets around Rock.
They also work closely with WK Live

Do you like to go electronic? DJs, Clubs, like your music served from Decks?
RUSS was a lovely idea for a society: Singer Songwriting.
It’s definitely sleeping at the moment, but we hope it will wake at some point. In the mean time, if you want any help with singer songwriting, or with getting your original material heard, drop us an email and let us know.
In times gone there was a Folk Society too. Personally I’d like to see a Madrigal Society, but I think it’s unlikely!
