Form a band or ensemble
Sometimes music is about joining in, but sometime it has to be about taking the lead, and making something happen: creating something.
After all, music is creative - right?!
What’s your passion? What would you like to see?
Ask yourself this question:
What group, or musical ensemble, or society, do you wish someone else had bothered to start?
We can’t create student societies or bands for you; but we’ll help however we can.
There are so many things we can do to make things easier and help your inspiration become reality.

Did you know that all you really need to form a new society is 3 friends?
Just 3 people with similar passion. Or just 3 willing friends!
Each pick a role:
President
Treasury
Welfare
Secretary
Fill in this form
Do a bit of training
Then get your society going!
We’ll help you in any way we can
(note you can start them Oct to March ish each year)
When you have the idea – and hopefully at least one other person who’s interested, come and see us
We’ll help you find a room and time
We’ll help you source and print music
We’ll even advertise it for you!
Did you know that as part of the OMAs we run training for students to learn how to rehearse groups? It’s incredibly valuable and life changing as a skill
If you’re nervous about taking that step, come and talk to us. We’ll help you, and give you great guidance!
During semester 1 it’s busy and exciting, but that’s when you should start finding the 4 people you need next year
(President, Tresuary Welfare, Secretary)
Then during semester 2 they can gently start taking part, getting a feel for it, so they’re confident for their own semester 1
Some big and well established societies topple, not because people aren’t into them, but because there’s no people in place for the committee.
When starting one, try to get a couple of people interested first.
It gives you a good idea of how likely people might be to want to come, and it also gives you a core group to begin with.
Having said that, sometimes you just need to put it out there in order to find your people!
Start small, grow big.
Begin with just 3 or 4. Get something going and existing. It might be that it takes a while doesn’t get big till after you’ve left uni, but it’s still something that exists because you created it and gave it to the world!
Not sure?
want a sounding board?
feeling overwhelmed?
stuck on practical things?
anything really…
Come and talk to us!

Get an idea started,
and start making music!
