Orchestra

At the heart of instrumental music at Reading is our Orchestra. From classical masterpieces to film scores and pop arrangements, Orchestra unites musicians who want to have musical fun and find the big sounds, the excitement, the occasional moments of magic! Friendly, ambitious and welcoming, it brings together players roughly Grade 5 level and above from across the University.

The Orchestra also takes part in what is arguably our coolest musical opportunity: performing alongside members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. We know. Pretty cool.

About Orchestra

We play everything from symphonic music to film scores, with the occasional pop arrangement and commission thrown in. There should be something for everyone!

Come along to the open weeks at the start of semesters to find out!
The answer though is: Lots of fun! Challenging, definitely; but definitely fun. It’s a good social vibe and there’s a break when you can chat. Plus: Dairy afterwards…. (wind down drinks and social time)

Orchestra gets a lot of big performances. The big end of semester ones. Plus also they get the amazing side by side with the RPO. Last year they got to play at the Hexagon; we’re hoping to make it again this year.

As a flag ship ensemble, and one of our best, the expectation for Orchestra is quite high. But all our ensembles expect commitment – both turning up for all (or almost all!) rehearsals, and turning up early enough to be ready to play on time (with your instrument, music, pencil blah blah blah!). Obviously we understand sometimes things happen, but it should be rare, and you should always get in touch with us, and explain, to let us know.
