Although everyone at Reading studied something else, a surprising number of our students have gone on to make music a part of their careers.

the arts is a creative place to be!
Our careers and development programme is designed to help get you there
– talks from industry leaders across a variety of paths in music, so that you can get a feel for what that pathway looks and feels like
– training in group leading as part of OMAs
– strong links with Berkshire Music Trust, including personal placements and mentoring
– experience-building opportunities, often paid, in the field you want to go into.
– Opportunities for ‘music adjacent’ interests. Build experience in elements like gig photography, social media, poetry, stage management, design, lighting, sound, events management, media planning, graphic design etc. We can help you build your experience, and again: often paid.

A big buzz word at the moment may be ‘portfolio career’, but for many of us, it’s not just a buzz word, it is a lived reality.
Portfolio careers (balancing several different elements) have their ups and downs of course, but they are a wonderful way to be creative and get variety. They’re also surprisingly ‘secure’ in the sense that there are multiple streams (not all eggs in that one metaphorical basket!) and you can pivot and adapt as needed.
Almost all careers in music started as a passion, then earnt a bit, then became a maybe, and only much later became a career. Start with building experience and earning bits and bobs as a side-line.
5 careers on 5 days a week gives you 5 potential lines to develop. It’s also less likely there will be many people with your specific combi of 5.
I heard on a podcast a while back something like: being top 10% in the world at something is very tough, being good at 2 or 3 things – and being top 10% with that specific combination – is much easier…
